Some of Greece's most famous sights are within day-trip reach of Vrachati. Here are the places we recommend around Athens and Attica: the Acropolis, Plaka, the Panathenaic Stadium and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion.

01

Athens is closer than you think

Greece's capital is about 90 minutes from Vrachati by car, so a day in Athens is easy to plan. Set off early, see the big sights and be back for a quiet evening.

02

The Acropolis

The Acropolis is the symbol of ancient Greece. Climb the rock to see the Parthenon, the Propylaia, the Temple of Athena Nike and the Erechtheion with its Caryatids, with views over the whole city. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat and the crowds, and check opening hours and ticket booking before you go.

03

Plaka, the old neighbourhood

Right below the Acropolis, Plaka is the old quarter of Athens, with narrow lanes, neoclassical houses, small shops and traditional tavernas. It is perfect for a relaxed lunch and a stroll after the climb.

04

The Panathenaic Stadium

Close to the city centre stands the Panathenaic Stadium, a stadium built entirely of white marble. It hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, and visitors can walk along the track and stand on the winners' podium.

05

Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon

About 70 km south-east of Athens, at the southern tip of Attica, Cape Sounion is crowned by the Temple of Poseidon. Built in the 5th century BC on a cliff high above the Aegean, it is one of the most dramatic settings in Greece.

06

Sunset at Sounion

The temple is famous for its sunsets. If you can, arrive in the late afternoon and watch the sun go down over the sea. Bring a jacket and allow plenty of time for the drive back.

07

A suggested plan for the day

For Athens, leave Vrachati early: the Acropolis first, then lunch in Plaka and the Panathenaic Stadium in the afternoon. Keep Sounion for another day, ideally timed for the sunset.

08

Stay in Vrachati

The drive to Athens takes around 90 minutes, and Sounion is about two hours from Vrachati. Come back to a quiet evening on the terrace, with no hotel to check in to.

Book your Acropolis ticket online in advance and wear comfortable shoes with good grip, as the marble paths can be slippery. Ask us for our favourite places in Plaka when you stay with us.
