The Corinth Canal is one of the most impressive sights in the Peloponnese: a narrow channel cut straight through solid rock, with sheer walls rising on both sides. Here is everything you need to plan a visit, and why a base in Vrachati makes it so easy.
A feat of engineering
The canal is about 6.4 km long and was opened in 1893. Its limestone walls rise dozens of metres above the water, while the channel at the bottom is only around 21 metres wide.
An idea that is 2,500 years old
Ancient rulers dreamed of cutting through the isthmus, and the Roman emperor Nero even began digging in AD 67. Meanwhile, ships were hauled across the Diolkos, a paved track used in antiquity.
It connects two seas
The canal links the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf, saving ships a long voyage around the Peloponnese.
The best viewpoints
The classic view is from the road and railway bridges high above the water. You can walk to the edge, take photos looking straight down the channel and watch the water far below.
Watch the submersible bridges
At each end of the canal, the bridges sink below the water to let boats pass, then rise again for road traffic. It is fascinating to watch if your timing is right.
Cruises and boat trips
Small boats and cruises pass through the canal in season, giving you the unique view from the bottom, between the towering walls.
For the adventurous
Bungee jumping from the bridge is a popular activity for thrill-seekers, with the canal walls rushing past below you.
Easy to combine with other sights
Ancient Corinth, Acrocorinth, Loutraki and the beaches are all nearby, so you can easily build a full day around the canal.
Best time to visit
Early morning and late afternoon offer softer light for photos and fewer crowds. Spring and autumn are comfortable for walking around the viewpoints.
