Vrachati is an excellent base for exploring the Peloponnese and beyond. Here are the places we recommend, from easy half-day visits to longer excursions. Travel times are approximate and depend on traffic; for the farther destinations and the islands, consider an overnight stay.
Mycenae
The Bronze Age citadel of Agamemnon, with the famous Lion Gate, the royal grave circles and the huge beehive tomb known as the Treasury of Atreus. A UNESCO World Heritage site, about an hour from Vrachati.
Epidaurus and its ancient theatre
The Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, from the 4th century BC, is famous for its perfect acoustics: a whisper on the stage can be heard in the top rows. The site also includes the sanctuary of Asklepios, the god of healing, and in summer the theatre hosts performances. About 1 hour 15 minutes away.
Nafplio, the old town
Nafplio was the first capital of modern Greece. Its Venetian-era old town, neoclassical houses, squares, cafés and seafront promenade make it one of the most charming towns in the country. About 1 hour 15 minutes from Vrachati.
Bourtzi and Palamidi fortress
The small Venetian fortress of Bourtzi sits on an island in Nafplio's harbour, reached by a short boat ride. High above the town, the Palamidi fortress offers sweeping views over the Argolic Gulf, reached by a long stairway or by car.
Ancient Olympia
The birthplace of the Olympic Games, with the Temple of Zeus, the Temple of Hera where the Olympic flame is lit, the ancient stadium and a superb museum. It is a long day, about 2.5 to 3 hours each way, so consider staying a night in the area.
Delphi
The sanctuary of Apollo and the seat of the famous oracle, once considered the centre of the world, set on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. The Temple of Apollo, the theatre, the stadium and the museum with the Charioteer are highlights. About 2.5 to 3 hours away, so plan a full day or an overnight stay.
Mystras
A UNESCO-listed Byzantine fortified town near Sparta, with churches, monasteries, frescoes and the palace of the Despots, climbing a hillside above the Evrotas valley. Roughly 2.5 hours by car.
Monemvasia
A medieval fortified town on a rocky islet joined to the mainland by a causeway. Its car-free lower town of stone houses, narrow lanes and Byzantine churches feels like a step back in time. About 3.5 hours away, so it is best with an overnight stay.
Hydra
A car-free island of stone mansions, a picturesque harbour, and transport by boat, on foot or by donkey. Drive to a port on the Peloponnese coast such as Metochi or Ermioni (roughly 2.5 hours), then take a boat. Check ferry timetables before you go.
Spetses
A green, pine-covered island with horse-drawn carriages, the Old Harbour and lovely beaches, reached by a short boat ride from the port of Kosta (roughly 2.5 hours' drive from Vrachati). Check ferry timetables and consider staying over.
Your base in Vrachati
Mycenae, Epidaurus and Nafplio are easy day trips and can even be combined. For Delphi, Olympia, Mystras, Monemvasia and the islands, plan a long day or a night away. Either way, you come back to a quiet evening on the terrace.
